First public library ambassadors announced
ALIA has announced the appointment of the nation's first two Public Library Ambassadors: Barry Heard, the award-winning Australian author, and Bruce Miller, one of New South Wales' most active local government leaders. It is a strong beginning for ALIA's national Public Library Ambassadors campaign. By seeking out high profile champions for the role of libraries in the community, ALIA aims to influence public opinion about this vital service and keep libraries at the forefront of discussions about community, resources, education, services, and funding.http://www.alia.org.au/governance/committees/public.libraries/summit09/public.library.ambassadors.html
ALIA fighting for cheaper books for Australians
The joint submission from ALIA, ADA (Australian Digital Alliance) and ALCC (Australian Libraries Copyright Committee) to the study of Copyright Restrictions on the Parallel Importation of Books, strongly supports removal of the restrictions upon parallel importation of books. We believe greater competition will lead to an increase in the variety of books available and more competitively priced books, increasing their accessibility for Australians. ALIA's position aligns with ALIA's first object: To promote the free flow of information and ideas in the interest of all Australians and a thriving culture, economy and democracy.http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/submissions/productivity.commission.html
Freedom of Information submission
ALIA coordinated a joint submission with four other library associations. The ALIA submission supports reform of the FOI legislation as a major step forward in seeking to provide proactive publication of government information for an informed nation. There is also a link to all submissions.http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/submissions/freedom.information.html
Digital Economy Future Directions submissions
All submissions, including the ALIA submission, in response to the 'consultation draft' for the Digital Economy Future Directions Paper are now available from the ALIA website.http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/submissions/digital.economy.html
School libraries hovering on the poverty line
The results of two new research studies, Snapshot of Australian School Libraries and Snapshot of Australian Teacher Librarians, show that Australia's school children are in danger of not getting what they need to support development of critical skills in information and reading literacy.http://www.alia.org.au/media.room/2009.05.09.html
