aliaNEWS: March 2009
[permission is granted to re-broadcast, in part or full]

In this aliaNEWS broadcast:

Victorian bushfires

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is shocked by the destruction the Victorian bushfires have caused to lives, townships, and communities.

We thank all the Australians and Australian libraries that are supporting these devastated areas and encourage everyone to donate time and money to assist those affected. Donations can be made to the Red Cross bushfires appeal.

More messages from the ALIA Board of Directors, and a brief summary of known library-related initiatives, can be found on the Board blog.

Help for collections damaged by fire or flood

Many people affected by flood and fire in Victoria, NSW, and Queensland may be looking for advice on how to salvage their family heirlooms in the coming weeks.

While many things will be permanently damaged or lost entirely, it may be possible to salvage surviving family photographs, documents, books, jewellery, medals, pictures, and other keepsakes.

Links to online resources about salvaging fire and flood-damaged material can be accessed via the front page of the AICCM website.

ALIA Public Library Ambassadors

A new initiative from ALIA is the launch of the ALIA Public Library Ambassadors program. Every public library in the country will identify library champions in their community and choose one or more local Ambassadors.

ALIA Public Library Ambassadors can be grass-root members of the community or celebrity advocates who will use their talent or fame to promote the value of public libraries in their lives, especially attracting media attention. Similar in concept to UNESCO's goodwill ambassadors, an important difference is that ALIA Public Library Ambassadors come from a broad cross-section of the Australian community.

Baillieu Library 50th anniversary exhibition launch – 20 March 2009

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Baillieu Library at the University of Melbourne. It was the first modern, purpose-built academic library in Australia and was officially opened by the then Prime Minister Robert Menzies on 21 March 1959. The Library is celebrating with an exhibition to be launched on 20 March, 2009. This will be followed by a dinner for those who would like to attend. Other events will occur later in the year. We would welcome any past Library staff or students who may wish to join us on this memorable occasion.

A 'Baillieu Library 50th anniversary' website will be launched in March which will include a virtual 'memory board', and we are asking the University community, former staff and alumni to contribute. If you would like to share your recollections of the Baillieu Library, please send your contribution to Mary Stone, marybs@unimelb.edu.au. Mary can also provide further details about the Exhibition and dinner. We look forward to your participation.
