How can ALIA better service its members?

In October 2008, ALIA will provide all members with an opportunity to give their views on ALIA’s services through a Member Survey. Developed in conjunction with Insync Surveys, information gathered from your feedback will enable the board to make strategic decisions on services that support all members. By having your say in the future directions of ALIA, you will also be in the running to win a $500 prize. Members will receive their surveys via email or the post. AARL editor: call for expressions of interest

Applications are sought for the position of editor of the Australian Academic & Research Libraries (AARL). The editor will be responsible for ensuring that the journal is produced within set time frames, and will primarily be responsible for editorial content. An honorarium will be negotiated with the successful applicant. This position is for 12 months. Closing date is 10 October 2008. Applicants should address the selection criteria which are available on the ALIA website:

AARL Editorial Board: call for expressions of interest for new Board members

ALIA is seeking expressions of interest from ALIA members who wish to take an active role as part of the Australian Academic & Research Libraries (AARL) Editorial Board. Editorial Board members will be involved in the overall policy and development of the journal, including determining the broad character of particular journal issues, assisting in the peer review process, and contributing ideas, themes and possible authors. Cultural Acquisitions Seminar: Where from and what for?

The ALIA Acquisitions Group invites you to register for a one-day seminar on Friday 17 October at the National Archives of Australia, Canberra. Artefacts are those three dimensional things that are the backbone of history. But will they continue to be important and will their collection, housing and preservation continue to be regarded as a benefit? What should we be collecting? Is a digital equivalent the same as the real thing? Postal registrations close on Thursday 9 October 2008.

RAILS5 and ALIA announce the availability of 2 scholarships for January 2009

Thanks to ALIA, RAILS5 is offering two $1500 scholarships to assist with travel and accommodation expenses. One scholarship will be awarded to the best either a recently-appointed academic or postgraduate student in LIS or a related field. The other will be awarded to an early career information professional. In both cases, acceptance of a refereed paper for presentation would be a prerequisite for eligibility.

Announcing the reformation of the ALIA Hunter Group

ALIA is proud to announce the reformation of the ALIA Hunter Group, disbanded in 2005. The group promotes professional development and provides a social network for library-minded folk in the Newcastle, Central Coast and Hunter area. Cybersmart guide for families now reprinted due to demand

The Cybersmart guide for families has been reprinted and all back orders are currently being filled, and they are well placed for future orders. Resources available from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) include Cybersmart guide for library staff, Cybersmart guide for families, poster, and four downloadable videos. The ACMA program is designed to assist library staff in promoting safe and positive internet experiences in public libraries, particularly for children.

ALIA's Professional Development Scheme

Participation in ALIA's professional development (PD) scheme is open to personal 'Associate' and 'Library technician' members. Members registered in the PD Scheme can now claim 20 points for their recent attendance at the Biennial Conference in Alice Springs. With your conference claim as well as an additional 10 points for professional reading, you will have enough to satisfy the minimum requirement of 30 points for the PD year July 2008 – June 2009. ALIA Biennial Conference 2010/2012

The ALIA Biennial Conference will not be held in 2010 as Australia will host the World Library and Information Congress 76th IFLA General Conference and Council in Brisbane. ALIA invites all of its members to join us and 4,000 other professional colleagues from around the world, for a week of networking and professional development. ALIA will be calling for Expressions of Interests from ALIA groups in early 2009 for the opportunity to host the 2012 ALIA Biennial Conference.

New publication available

The Centre for Information Studies has published the revised edition of Organising Knowledge in a Global Society. The work reflects on current practice and trends, paying particular attention to how libraries and other information services provide intellectual access to digital information resources through metadata.
