aliaNEWS: ELECTION SPECIAL 2008
[permission is granted to re-broadcast, in part or full]

In this aliaNEWS broadcast:

The ALIA Board of Directors

The ALIA Board of Directors is the elected governing body of the Association. There are eight members of the Board, seven of whom are elected: the president, the vice-president, five elected directors. The President, Vice-President and four Directors are elected by the membership at large; one Director is elected by institutional members. The ALIA Executive Director is the eighth (non-voting) member of the Board. All voting directors must be personal members and represent the interests of the organisation as a whole, rather than those of a particular constituency. Terms of office are for two years with a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Details about the Board of Directors, meetings and other governance information can be found at http://www.alia.org.au/governance/

In 2008 Board candidates were asked to provide a 100 word statement of professional concerns as well as responses to four additional questions and to provide links to other websites and personal blogs. These are linked from each candidate’s details at http://www.alia.org.au/governance/elections/2008/

Who can vote

Only financial personal members and the nominated representative of financial institutional members of the Association as of 21 February 2008 are eligible to vote in this election.

Your ballot papers

All members vote for:
Vice-president (President-elect) - WHITE BALLOT PAPER and the Board of Directors – CREAM BALLOT PAPER

Institutional members vote for:
Vice-president (President-elect) - WHITE BALLOT PAPER and the Board of Directors – CREAM BALLOT PAPER and a Board member elected by institutional members – BLUE BALLOT PAPER

[NOTE: If you have not received your ballot papers in inCite or in the mail, please contact Helen Wheeldon via email at helen.wheeldon@alia.org.au to request a replacement set of ballot papers.]

How to vote

Please indicate your preference by NUMBERING the squares. Voting for fewer than the number of candidates will NOT invalidate your vote. However, ballot papers with markings other than numbers will be rendered invalid and will not be counted. Candidates are listed alphabetically. It is important to show preferences to maximise your voting options.

[NOTE: If you mark the ballot paper with ticks or crosses, it will be deemed invalid.]

How to ensure your vote is valid

  1. Complete and remove ballot paper from the ballot paper leaflet.
  2. Enclose the ballot paper in the provided BLANK envelope (or any other blank envelope). All the ballot papers should be returned in the same blank envelope.
  3. Enclose the blank envelope containing the ballot papers in the ALIA-addressed ballot paper return envelope.
  4. Write your full name, address and membership number on the back of the ballot paper envelope. Nominated representatives of institutional members must include the institution’s name, institution’s membership number and address. [Note: This is where most people go wrong – if you do not put all of this detail on the back of the envelope, it will be deemed invalid]
  5. Post the completed envelope (no stamp is required if posted in Australia).

Your ballot must be received at ALIA National Office, PO Box 6335, Kingston ACT 2604
by 5:00pm AEST Wednesday 9 April 2008.

Any voting papers received after the closing date will not be opened.

Please contact ALIA National Office on 1800 020 071 if you have any questions relating to ballot papers and the election.

Candidate for Vice-president (President-elect): Kevin Dudeney

Statement of professional concerns:
That ALIA continues to develop its services to members and the profession through adherence to its Core Value Statements and ongoing good corporate governance. That through leadership and strategic planning, ALIA continues to ensure it is representing and communicating with, and on behalf of, members in a transparent and consultative manner. That quality professional develo9pment opportunities are accessible and relevant to all members, whether metropolitan or regional based. That as a profession we strive for equitable access to information for all members of society, including greater use of available technology such as Web/Library 2.0. That productive networks with like minded organisations in Asia Pacific region continue to be fostered.

Candidate for Vice-president (President-elect): Jan Richards

Statement of professional concerns:
Libraries across Australia are being faced with a suite of issues. Political, social and technological changes offer us a myriad of challenges, but also opportunities. It is a time for us to work together as one industry to address these through policy direction, education and professional development for the benefit of our members and the communities we serve. If we are to achieve this and retain our relevance we need to speak with one voice, and to do this we need to work in concert with other library organisations.

Candidate for Board of Directors: Michelle Brennand

Statement of professional concerns:
I believe ALIA has a critical role to play in building our national profile so that people recognise the valuable contribution libraries make to society. Raising the profile of the library profession in the community and with decision makers is also essential because of challenges such as funding, ageing infrastructure, the cost and impact of technological change and a shrinking workforce, all of which places the future of libraries at risk. As Director I would work to further develop the national presence of libraries through ALIA. Further, I would continue my work in the governance of the Association as well as membership growth as both good governance and membership participation are fundamental to the sustainability of the Association.

Candidate for Board of Directors: Philip Keane

Statement of professional concerns:
On being elected to the ALIA Board in 2006, my chief professional concern was the continuing role and value of ALIA events and conferences to members. Over 2007, as Chair of the Standing Committee on Conferences, I have worked with National Office staff and current convenors of ALIA events, to update the conference manual. The new manual will greatly assist members organising ALIA events and conferences. Through 2006 and 2007, I have worked on the Board’s Finance and Risk Management Committee to ensure that ALIA’s financial settings and directions are best set for ALIA and for ALIA to work for its members. Over the last two years, I have gained a detailed understanding of the Association, and would welcome the opportunity to continue to use this knowledge in seeing ALIA through the challenges over the next two years – particularly the challenges of new technologies that are changing how we work, and what we need from our Association.

Candidate for Board of Directors: Brenda McConchie

Statement of professional concerns:
Education and training is a major issue for our profession. I have been active in this area as a Director of Aurora and in consultation with the University of Canberra to have their library programmes re-established and revitalised to meet the needs of our changing profession. The positioning of libraries as a major force in articulating and interpreting information needs across the community, business, government, research and industry is a driving influence on my involvement in leadership programmes for librarians and my commitment to the need for leading edge technology and top quality education and training for our profession.

Candidate for Board of Directors: Helen Partridge

Statement of professional concerns:
The future of our profession can only be realised by open, timely and free-flowing communication between practitioners, library educators and ALIA. As director, I would work to ensure this is achieved. Over the next two years I believe we need to communicate on two key issues: (i) professional development and education that genuinely meets the current and future needs of our profession; and (ii) embracing a scholarly approach to our work by adopting a culture of evidence based practice to inform and build our professional knowledge.

Candidate for Board of Directors: Gail Schmidt

Statement of professional concerns:
My professional interests and concerns include: ensuring that LIS education and continuing professional development opportunities genuinely meet current and future needs of the profession and are accessible to all; workforce planning and the capacity of our profession to adapt to the changing role of information providers in the 21st century. ALIA has a critical role in supporting and maintaining continued relevance to its members and the wider information industry, as well as seeking opportunities to partner or collaborate with a range of organisations to market the profession more widely to current and future generations.

Candidate for Board of Directors: Kate Sinclair

Statement of professional concerns:
I have been an active ALIA member since 2001 and firmly believe that ALIA membership, advocacy & participation in the Association activities are integral to the vigour of our profession. It is important that we ensure the continuing financial viability of the Association by developing further opportunities for membership growth and engagement, and fostering partnerships that deliver tangible return on investment to members and other stakeholders, including employers and educators. ALIA has led the way with strong initiatives for new graduates since 2002. How we maintain these initiatives, provide mentoring opportunities and manage generational change within the Association and the profession, is the next challenge. We should enhance opportunities for retired and experienced members of the profession to contribute. Finally, I would like to see a continued focus on how we can best support, recruit, retain and reward ALIA’s local volunteers to deliver outstanding services to members at the grassroots level. http://www.alia.org.au/governance/elections/2008/board/candidates.html
