ALIA National Library & Information Technicians Conference 2007

There is still time to register for the conference to be held from 9-12 October 2007 at the Grand Hyatt, Melbourne. The conference will provide a forum for professional networking and socialising among national and international participants. Delegates will learn about the latest trends and developments for libraries, share the expertise, experience, and knowledge of the invited eminent speakers and update themselves on new products and services from the trade and publishing worlds. National Simultaneous Storytime 2007

The ALIA 2008 Biennial Conference will be held in Alice Springs from 2-5 September 2008. The Call for Papers is now open. ALIA Retirees

ALIA Retirees is ALIA's newest national group. The group's theme is 'Staying Connected', and an e-list and a blog have been established to assist retirees to stay in touch with each other as well as the profession in general and ALIA. IFLA 2010

ALIA is proud and excited to announce that ALIA and Brisbane have been selected to host the IFLA World Library and Information Congress in 2010. The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of this year's Congress in Durban, South Africa. The chair of the National Committee will be Keith Webster, University Librarian at the University of Queensland. Managing copyright compliance in libraries and information services

pic Registrations are now open for the 5th ALIA Top End Symposium! The symposium will be held at the Skycity in Darwin between 5-6 October. The theme of this year's symposium, 'e-volving education', will focus on the changing ways in which the library and information industry promotes learning. It will also focus on the evolution of how the library industry maintains its own "education" in ensuring that its professionals stay on top of information trends. The Librarians

The Librarians, a six-part ABC TV comedy, goes to air on 31 October 2007. ALIA is setting up a members blog to facilitate discussion about the show. The blog is for musing about how the series portrays us, how other media portray us and how others see us and how we see ourselves. You have to be a current member to contribute but anyone can comment. The blog will be available soon.

ALIA 2008 Aurora Scholarship

Funds of up to $4 000 are available each year to support attendance by an ALIA member at the Aurora Leadership Institute. The Aurora Foundation conducts the institute which aims to assist future leaders in the library and associated cultural and information industry to maximise leadership skills and potential. The purpose of the scholarship is to enable an ALIA member to attend the Institute where this would otherwise be difficult due to the financial commitment required. Applications for the ALIA scholarship are a part of the main Aurora application process and should be submitted by 22 October 2007.

Launch of Uniting a Profession

The ALIA publication, Uniting a profession: the Australian Institute of Librarians 1937-1949 by Jean P Whyte and David J Jones, will be launched at the welcome function for the Forum on Australian Library History on Thursday 27 September 2007 at the State Library of NSW. The Australian School Libraries Research Project

This is a partnership between the Australian School Library Association (ASLA), the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and Edith Cowan University (ECU). It will conduct two surveys to gain a snapshot of the state of school libraries in Australia and examine the roles and qualifications of library personnel in Australian schools. Data will provide ALIA and ASLA with information that can be used to: promote the importance of school libraries in education; highlight the necessity for trained personnel in school libraries; and develop proposals for greater funding for school libraries across Australia.
