Is this Australia's first library 'unconference'?
What's the best part of a conference? Most people agree it's the networking, the opportunity to talk to colleagues. Here is a conference that's just that: a powerpoint-free zone! An unconference focuses on what the people at the event are interested in. The organisers provide a general theme, space, and enough blank surfaces to write on. The Library 2.0 Unconference will be held in Melbourne on 2 March 2007. The theme is Library 2.0/Web 2.0 and how it might be applied to your library service. The Library 2.0 Melbourne Unconference blog is at http://unconferencemelbourne.blogspot.com/ Cost: $30 per participant. Register at:

Call for Papers: Making connections between library, book, reading and info
This conference will be held 7-8 June 2007, organised by the Information History Group, Leeds Metropolitan University and associated groups. It aims to bring together scholars from these overlapping areas of historical study. Papers are invited on any aspect of library, book, reading, print-culture or information history. Papers displaying an interplay between these are especially welcome. Abstracts of 300 words (maximum), along with a one-page CV, should be e-mailed to Professor Alistair Black (a.black@leedsmet.ac.uk) by 15 January 2007.

Applications that are sustainable and demonstrate most value to learning will be migrated to edna production services. Try out web conferencing (Live Classroom), podcasting (Moodle/iPodcast) and a personal learning environment (elgg), with more coming.

Copyright Amendment Act 2006
This Act received Royal Assent on Mon 11 December 2006 and some parts came into force on that day. The Australian Libraries Copyright Committee, representing ALIA and other library organisations, made strong representations to the Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee, and was successful in having amendments made to the original bill. The resulting legislation, while not ideal, is more favourable to libraries than the original proposal. A summary of the Act and its implications for libraries will be available on the ALIA website in mid January. An information sheet outlining the amendments is available from the Australian Copyright Council (ACC).
