National Advisory Congress 2006: Regional meetings


Regional meetings will be held in late July and throughout August in 12 locations across Australia. Be there or be square! Seminar on 'Managing E-Resources'

ALIA Premier Awards: Closing date 1 August


The closing date for the premier ALIA awards is 1 August. Nominations for the HCL Anderson, the Redmond Barry and Ellinor Archer Awards must be received by this date. Nominations for the Excellence Award will be accepted until 30 September. Nominations for the next Metcalfe Award will close in June 2007.

Children's Book Week: Book now! 19-25 August


The theme of Children's Book Week 2006 is Book Now! The week this year is 19-25 August. The shortlist and notable books for the Book of the Year Awards were announced on 5 April 2006. Book of the Year Award winners will be announced 18 August 2006. Merchandise is available from the Children's Book Council website.

Shortage of Academic Librarians


Members of the Western European Studies Section (WESS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) have formed a committee to address the current and long-term shortage of academic librarians. They are particularly interested to advise scholars and teachers with foreign language training and advanced degrees that academic librarianship provides additional options for using their training in an academic setting.

Matters of Life and Death: Annual Lecture


Professor Ian Donaldson, Director of the Humanities Research Centre, will deliver this year's Australian Book Review/La Trobe University Annual Lecture. Professor Donaldson's theme will be 'Matters of Life and Death: The return of biography'. He will examine some of the forces driving the current resurgence of interest in biography, and some of the more enterprising examples of the genre. ABR is presenting the lecture in three states: 9 August at the National Library of Australia, Canberra, 20 September, La Trobe University, Melbourne, and 8 October at the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide.
