Library and Information Week
Library and Information Week (LIW) promotes the fabulous services the LIS sector offers to all Australians. A free flow of and equitable access to information is vital in a democratic society, and libraries ensure information is available to everyone: we are linking people with ideas. Media kits are available to supplement your own local media program, LIW merchandise is for sale, and check out the competitions on the LIW website. There's something for everyone!

Information Awareness Month
ALIA sponsors Information Awareness Month (IAM). May 2006 is the first IAM and the theme is 'Personal Records'. IAM raises public awareness of the importance of good records and maintenance of information as it relates to everyone, from global corporations to the individual, in all aspects of life. Privacy, freedom of information, identity theft, fraud and taxation are all related to good record-keeping and management of information. For more information about IAM events, which is extensive and growing all the time.

James Bennett Lecture
The James Bennett lecture for Library and Information Week 2006 will feature Mark Macleod as guest speaker. Mark is a publisher at Hodder Headline and has lectured in children's literature at Macquarie University. For the James Bennett lecture, Mark will touch on some of the controversial issues in his world, and the impact a good (or bad) idea can have. Hear him at the Metcalfe Auditorium, State Library of New South Wales, 5:30 pm, Friday 26 May. Free entry. To book your seat, phone Kate at the Australian Library and Information Association, 1800 020 071.

Copyright reforms announced
The Attorney General has announced a number of proposed changes to the Copyright Act in response to the recent government inquiry into 'Fair Use and Other Copyright Exceptions' and the 'Digital Agenda Review' conducted by Phillips Fox. The changes appear likely to benefit libraries and other cultural institutions. The most relevant part of the announcement concerns the new 'flexible dealing exception' permitting libraries and archives to copy for non-commercial purposes. The reforms also acknowledge the widespread use of mp3 players, VCRs and DVDs by permitting format shifting and time shifting for personal use. Further analysis waits on the draft Bill.

ALIA AGM held 16 May 2006
Members present at the 18th AGM ensured that all business was completed as required. The outgoing President, Gill Hallam, reported on 2005 in ALIA's five key areas - members, communication, education, innovation and learning and finance and management. Focus in the past year has been on membership growth and retention, awards (those recognising individual member achievement and those encouraging research activities), events and conferences and, importantly, on addressing policy issues on behalf of the profession. Sue Hutley, attending her first AGM as Executive Director, noted an important focus on communication and community involvement while developing members resources and services.
New affinity program launched
At the AGM on the 16 May, ALIA launched its new membership affinity program, a partnership with Member Advantage Pty Ltd. For more information about the much increased range of services see the website.

Mentoring NSW is looking for a new convenor!
We are currently running our second intake of mentors and proteges. We are looking for someone to handle administration of the group, prepare reports to the board, and lead the committee and participants throughout the year. The committee meets virtually (ie, over e-mail!), holds four dinners annually with participants, and hosts 'Library Folk in the Pub' monthly. While we would expect you to be able to attend the dinners, you do not need to attend the pub nights every month. If you are interested in becoming our new convenor, please contact me on fiona.bradley@uts.edu.au.

Who is the Employer of Choice in the information industry?
Libraries and information services need to recruit and retain the best people. Therefore, the industry needs to know what people are looking for when they choose a place in which to work. So, what influences you when applying for a job? What influences you to stay there? Flexi_time? Over_time? Security? Professional support? Lots of money? To help answer these questions, please fill in our survey. It is completely anonymous, and should take you no more than 5 minutes. We are Benjamin Wheal and Robyn Ellard (eoclib2@yahoo.com.au), independent researchers investigating Employer Of Choice in the Australian information industry.
