Staff changes at the National Office
Many members and non-members who have dealt with Renee Kirkham in the past will be sorry to hear she has left ALIA to join the public service. Renee's charm and capability will be much missed. Her responsibilities for ALIA events and committees will be taken over by Jane Hardy, our new events manager. We welcome Jane to ALIA. She can be contacted on 02 6215 8235, or e-mail jane.hardy@alia.org.au
New research award
The ALIA Board has instituted the Twila Ann Janssen Herr Award for Disability Services, to be offered for the first time in 2006 and biennially thereafter. This award has been made possible by a generous donation to the ALIA Research Fund from Twila Herr. Donations to the Research Fund are tax deductible. Applications for this new award close 1 June 2006. For more information contact marie.murphy@alia.org.au

Linking people with ideas @ Your Library
ALIA will join the @ Your Library campaign and will begin using it during Australian Library and Information Week 2006, accompanying the theme 'Linking people with ideas'. The 'Linking' theme is derived from our Core Values Statement: 'We guide, inform and educate the seeker in defining and refining the search, and foster intellectual freedom and all forms of communication.' [http://www.alia.org.au/policies/core.values.html] The @ Your Library campaign will be developed as time goes on, with more useful material and good ideas added. You can give us your suggestions through the website [http://alia.org.au/alianet/comment.html]

Library and Information Week 2006
The 2006 Library and Information Week page will be up on our website in the first week of April. Drop in to see the merchandise, the theme and the activities. Are you conducting an event for Library and Information Week or National Library Technicians Day? Don't forget to submit your event for inclusion in our LIW 2006 Calendar: email the details to events@alia.org.au.

Upgrading your membership
Members of ALIA who have completed an ALIA-accredited course in librarianship or library technician studies may upgrade their membership status to either Associate or Library Technician. Download an application form or contact ALIA to have a form posted. Copies of your qualifications are required, including undergraduate degrees if you are applying with a postgraduate qualification. Official transcripts will suffice if you are yet to attend your graduation ceremony. An administration fee also applies. You will be forwarded a notarised certificate once your upgrade has been formalised and may use the appropriate post-nominals while you are a financial member.

Disruption to North Queensland library services
Cyclone Larry's recent devastation of North Queensland communities has disrupted the continuity of library services in the region. The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) is contacting affected public libraries to determine what assistance can be provided. The Queensland government is endeavouring to restore essential services as the first priority. More details about the full impact on public libraries of this natural disaster and the efforts to restore normal library services will become available over coming weeks.
