Executive directorship
The Board of Directors of ALIA wishes to advise that they will be seeking a new executive director to lead the Association from the beginning of 2006. The current executive director, Jennefer Nicholson, has very successfully managed the Association as it moved from being a chartered association to being established as a corporate entity and has achieved ongoing growth in the recruitment and retention of members to make ALIA one of Australia's leading professional associations, highly-regarded both nationally and internationally. Regrettably, Jennefer has indicated that she will not be reapplying for the position... [full article follows on link]

New directions in special librarianship [3-4 Nov 2005]
If you work in a special library, how involved are you in major knowledge management initiatives in your organisation? How ready are you to provide a virtual information service to your clients? Do you know how to effectively negotiate licences for e-resources? What is your role in information security? How skilled is your marketing? If you need to get on top of these issues and ensure that you provide a valuable information service to your clients, come to the 'New directions in special librarianship symposium' in Melbourne. For registration enquiries: contanct conferences@alia.org.au or ph 02 6215 8222.

ALIA Annual General Meeting [25 Nov 2005]
President Gillian Hallam and directors invite members to join them and delegates of the National Advisory Congress for the ALIA General Meeting [5:30pm Friday 25 November 2005 at ALIA House], followed by drinks. The Board is presenting a special resolution to amend the Constitution to allow for the election of all directors by the general membership. This is consistent with the requirement in the Constitution that directors represent the interests of the Association as a whole, and to allow for a simplified and more equitable election process. RSVP: Mary Ann Ryan, ph 02 6215 8214.

Attention ALIA PD scheme members
It's audit time again - get your paperwork together! ALIA randomly selects ten per cent of ALIA PD scheme members annually and conducts an audit of PD activities to ensure that members are meeting the requirements of the scheme by accumulating the minimum of 30 points annually and 120 points over a triennium (three years). If you are selected, ALIA will contact you by mail in October to request that you provide a record of your PD activities for the reporting period 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2005.

ALIA National Office wishes to appoint ALIA local liaison officers (LLOs) for South Australia and Queensland. LLOs are responsible for promoting ALIA and supporting members by: helping to co-ordinate promotional activities with groups, including membership recruitment drives and promotions; facilitating the exchange of information and communications between office-bearers and ALIA National Office, and local groups; supporting members in remote and regional areas; acting as the ALIA representative in the state or territory. More staffing at ALIA National Office
We take this opportunity to farewell Emma Royan-Smith, our Events manager, who leaves on 7 October. Her duties will be shared by Renee Kirkham, Meredith Hinchliffe, and others in the interim. Further, we also farewell Rob Brian, our copyright advisor, and welcome his replacement, Moyra McAllister. Many will recall that Moyra has had a long and illustrious involvement with ALIA (and she thoroughly enjoys copyright issues!).

ALIA's response to national licensing proposal
ALIA supports the concept of national licences for selected online resources and the objectives for a national licensing initiative as set out in the issues paper by the National Licensing Reference Group, 'Making online information available for all Australians'. The Association believes that co-ordinated and cost-effective purchasing of online resources at a national level has the potential to assist libraries from all sectors to provide quality online information for their users. ALIA's response, which was endorsed by the Board of Directors at its 19 September meeting is now available.
