We are delighted to congratulate Jan Fullerton, on her award of Officer in the General Division (AO) of the Order of Australia; and Alan Bundy, on his award of Member in the General Division (AM) of the Order of Australia. Both have made significant contributions to the library and information sector, and their respective awards recognise their commitment to the provision of services to the wider community.

A recent batch of e-mail viruses are sending e-mails with 'account violation' or 'Update you password'. One or two are masquerading as an ALIAnet missive, and are phishing for credentials. Please note that ALIA policy dictates that we will not ask for verification of any of your personal details via e-mail, and that all communications will be either be sent to your home address, or confirmed over the telephone, via a call-back mechanism. Note also that e-mails (from any source) with attachments that are not requested by the recipient should be treated with extreme suspicion. There is no 'Alia Support Team'!

3rd Int'l EBL Conference [16-19 October 2005]
Registrations have now opened for the 3rd International Evidence-based Librarianship Conference, to be held at the Holiday Inn, Brisbane from 16-19 October 2005. The theme of the 2005 conference is 'Global Perspectives on Linking Research with Practice'. The conference reflects the growing importance of evidence-based practice in all sectors of the library and information profession and offers a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge research in the field. The conference welcomes the involvement of all sectors within the profession - public, academic, school and special.

The ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference - the neXt step - the neXt big thing - the neXt conference - the neXt major national event for library and information technicians will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour from 6-9 September 2005. National Simultaneous Storytime [2 September 2005]
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) 2005 will be held during National Literacy and Numeracy Week, at 11:00am AEST, Friday 2 September 2005. Organisations wishing to participate in NSS will be able to register through the ALIA website. In return for a registration fee of $27.95, registered participants will receive a hardback, 21st anniversary edition of the 2005 NSS picture book, 'Wombat stew', along with an exclusive wombat stew activity promotion pack containing posters, bookmarks, balloons, a guide for readers theatre, craft ideas, and a media kit for promoting NSS in your library. Registrations for NSS will open in July 2005.

Managing editor vacancy
A competent and experienced individual is required to provide high-quality management and editing of all Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) publishing programs. Reporting to the executive director, responsibilities will include writing and editorial activity (online and in print), proof-reading, story sourcing and co-ordination, author management, and related publishing and administrative activities. The successful candidate will be self-motivated, with good interpersonal and team skills. Proven high-quality writing and editing skills are essential. Ray Choate Scholarship
Nominations are called for the Ray Choate Scholarship. This award enables the recipient to investigate a particular aspect of reference or information services that will lead to improved practice in the area. Closing date for applications: 31 July 2005.

Library Technician of the Year
Nominations are open for the 2005 Library Technician of the Year Award (proudly sponsored by Edith Cowan University). This award promotes the role of library technicians in library and information science. Nominees must be a personal member of the Library Technicians Group and hold an LT qualification recognised by ALIA. Nominees may be judged on their contribution to the advancement of library technicians, journal publications and/or conference papers, or personal achievement in the development of library and information services or development within the Association. Nominations close 1 July 2005.

Are you keen to use the additional Certified Practitioner post-nominal 'CP', or are you seeking the distinction of ALIA Associate Fellow? Join ALIA's PD scheme before 30 June 2005 and you can record PD activities undertaken from 1 July 2004 to 30 June 2005. Ongoing compliance in ALIA's PD scheme - with a simple points and record-keeping system and wide range of activities - requires the accumulation of 120 points over a triennium, with a minimum of 30 points each year.
