2005 Federal Budget
Was it Peter Costello's 10th Budget? Or John Howard's 16th? Whichever, it is a massive achievement. No previous treasurer has delivered consecutive double-digit Budgets. Among prime ministers, only Menzies has presided over more. The 2005 Budget is another Costello triumph and a superb political platform for the fourth Howard government. A surplus of $8.9 billion far exceeds earlier expectations. Mr Costello has been able to cater for the array of election promises that many feared would not be delivered. All this is no small achievement.
