Gillian Hallam [vice-president candidate]
It is important for library and information work to be recognised as a dynamic and exciting profession which makes a significant contribution to the success of the whole community in the Information Age. It is essential that our core values are upheld in a rapidly-changing world, yet at the same time the range and quality of our professional skills must continue to develop to remain relevant. Critical factors include forging stronger collaborative partnerships between practitioners and educators to support effective career-long training and development, and attracting intelligent, enthusiastic and confident people who will strive to inform, innovate and inspire.

Trevor Wakely [vice-president candidate]
As an active member of the library and information profession, I have valued the networking and cross-sectorial exposure I have had to issues affecting the information industry - the image of the profession, LIS education, lobbying, mentoring, member recruitment/retention and the value of our Association in representing us. My willingness to work and represent you, has been proven by my past work and I welcome the opportunity to further represent library technicians, librarians and the host of other information workers that are both members - and potential members - of the Association.

Sharan Harvey [Board candidate]
My professional interests and concerns include: reference and information services, particularly the ongoing development of librarians as leaders in information literacy and lifelong learning; library design and the continued development of libraries as hubs of their communities; application of innovative technology and opportunities for collaboration between libraries; ongoing development of strategic planning and leadership skills within the library sector.

Meredith Martinelli [Board candidate]
ALIA is moving into a period of consolidation and development after a time of major change and restructure. To continue as a viable choice for all members of the library and information sector, ALIA must actively initiate ways in which they can support the professional and developmental needs of their members. I believe that the continuing development of the CPD program, particularly to those in geographic isolation, is a key factor in the relevance of ALIA to sector members. By expanding and supporting mentor programs nationally, providing informed advice on skills and knowledge for the future and liaising with groups to develop a consistency of program development, ALIA can be instrumental in ensuring the ongoing importance of this sector's current and future generations.

Roxanne Missingham [Board candidate]
Libraries have a key role in Australia in 2004. They contribute enormously to the development of all aspects of an information society - through services and collections which support Australians in their work, study and at home. ALIA has critical role in promoting the value of libraries to politicians and the community to seek support and funding. I seek your support to participate in the ALIA Board to set directions in: energise ALIA activities for library staff in all parts of Australia; influence decision-makers to better support Australian libraries; and to help members address current issues.

Carol Newton-Smith [Board candidate]
My areas of professional concern focus on continuing professional development, encouraging practical research of professional relevance, and lobbying for appropriate pay rates for information professionals. In the last few years, I have enjoyed assisting new graduates with their transition into the profession and I would like to see mentoring programs available Australia-wide. I have presented a number of papers at ALIA conferences over the last ten years. This contact with my colleagues has made me aware of the concerns of a broad section of the information profession. I look forward to making a positive contribution as a Board member.

Congratulations to Moyra McAllister, the national director of library and information services with Blake Dawson Waldron. A former ALIA director, Moyra has been a driving force and leader within the ALIA Copyright and Intellectual Property Working Group and the ALIA Purchasing and Consortia Reference Group, mentoring programs. The fellowship, ALIA's highest award, is to be presented on 18 March 2004 in Victoria.
