Review of members' engagement and participation
We are now part-way through this wide-ranging review to assess the effectiveness of ALIA's current group structure and the value and significance of groups to members and the Association. Thank you to all groups who have provided submissions for the review and to everyone out of the sample of members invited to take part in the member survey who chose to respond. Your submissions and survey responses are now being collated. For more information about the review see the article in the November 2003 issue of inCite (p28).

ALIA Forum on Purchasing Agreements and Licensing
The forum, to be held in Melbourne on 2 February 2004, will bring together librarians and suppliers to discuss the issues surrounding the acquisition of electronic resources and will feature a mix of presentations by invited speakers, panel session and interactive discussion. Numbers are limited so please register early to secure your place.

New resources on public access internet services
New resources relating to this critical area of library services are now available, and include guidelines for members relating to ALIA's statement on online content regulation plus an overview of legislation. The report on ALIA's 2002 survey of internet access in public libraries is also available, and provides insights into how people are using the internet and the ways in which libraries are providing community education and are promoting and assisting responsible and effective access to online content. A detailed survey report has been issued for members and the executive summary and a summary report are available to all.

First Associate Fellow
Congratulations to David Tan, ALIA's first Associate Fellow. At the recent ALIA Victoria Group Christmas function, ALIA director Angela Bridgland presented David with his certificate and formally acknowledged his achievements in meeting the criteria for this newest membership category. Associate and Library Technician members who have committed to ALIA's CPD scheme and meet the established criteria may seek to join the Associate Fellow category. More information about Associate Fellowship is available from Marie Murphy [marie.murphy@alia.org.au].
New Librarian's Symposium 1.5
The one-day ALIA New Librarian's Symposium 1.5 held in Brisbane on 5 December was an enjoyable CPD day for new and young information professionals. As the first major event by the New Graduates Group, formed in 2003, it was pleasing to see enthusiasm and new ideas for our profession. Speakers presentations and photos from the day are now on ALIAnet. Plans are well underway for NLS2, to be held in Adelaide in December 2004. More information on this event forthcoming.

Vale
It is with regret that we announce the death in recent times of three of our long-standing high-profile and well-respected members: Warren Horton, Ena Nöel, and Allan Horton. Each helped to shape not just the Association, but the broader library and information sector as well. The impact of their work lives on, however. More information available on the ALIAnet home page.

Feedback
The response to aliaNEWS is still very positive, more so now that we offer it in a multitude of formats (e-mail, html, xml, rss). As always, though, we would like to know your thoughts on what you would like to see in this broadcast, and how you would like to see it. Send your comments to Ivan Trundle, manager, communications and publishing.
