New phone numbers
ALIA National Office has a whole new set of phone numbers, and a more sophisticated service that allows for an out-of-business-hours answering service, and offers members the opportunity to call a number directly related to the matter that they wish to discuss. please check with the ALIAnet website for further details. The old ALIA National number will be retired before the end of the year, although it redirects calls to the new number at present.

ALIA National Office's main phone number is now 02 6215 8222 [Membership enquiries: 6215 8282]. Please note that the fax and freecall numbers remain the same. The entire set of available numbers can be gleaned from:

National Policy Congress update
ALIA's National Policy Congress for 2002 is well underway. The regional meetings in Perth, Sydney and Hobart have already been held. Feedback from these meetings has been very positive. There has been lots of lively discussion about two agenda items in particular. There will be a further three meetings held tonight, in Melbourne, Brisbane and Darwin. The Canberra meeting will be held on 9 October. If you have any questions please contact Georgina Dale ph 02 6215 8229.

ALIA forum on purchasing agreements
On 14 October 2002, representatives of key library organisations and ALIA groups will meet at ALIA House, Canberra to discuss the critical issues for libraries relating to agreements, licences and consortia for the purchase of products and services, in particular for access to electronic resources. The forum will consider existing purchasing and consortia models; What are the issues to address for different library sectors?; Roles and responsibilities for library organisations; What outcomes are desirable and how can they be achieved? Creator-to-consumer industry seminar: Darwin, Brisbane, Townsville
Based on the C-2-C Research Project [http://www.c-2-cproject.com], this free one-day seminar series will provide all players in the book production supply chain an opportunity to stop and consider how they might change what they do to become part of a more sustainable and vibrant book industry. Darwin: 7 October, Brisbane: 9 October, Townsville: 11 October. This two-day seminar/workshop is aimed at new librarians in the Australia-Pacific Region. Topics covered include: Your career - career planning , Success stories, Managing upwards, Current trends and issues in the profession.

11th Information Online Conference and Exhibition, Jan 2003 Sydney
Come and exchange information, explore new developments and major issues concerning online and multimedia information and communications. International Conference on the Future of the Book, Apr 2003 Cairns
Supported by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, this conference will explore the technological, commercial and cultural futures of the book. The conference is a significant part of a major research and development project sponsored by the department. The conference will address the provocative suggestion that the book will thrive and prosper as a cultural and commercial artifact. To be held in Cairns 22-24 April 2003, right between the Easter and Anzac Day long weekends...

10th Asia-Pacific Special, Health and Law Librarians' Conference
As the leading conference and exhibition for Special, Health and Law library and information professionals, Celebrate the Future will be held at the Adelaide Convention Centre 24-27 August 2003. The theme, 'Celebrate the future', will provide a forum for information professionals to develop new ideas and explore the information future with colleagues and vendors. Organisers are calling for innovative, practical and research papers, as well as case studies on all aspects of information management. Generally presentations will last for 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions. We also welcome panel discussions and poster papers.

12th National Library Technicians Conference 9-12 Sept 2003
[Bridging services embracing reality] In addition to a very comprehensive education program which will include many workshops, there will be outstanding keynote and invited speakers, library visits, peer paper presentations, and plans which will make for a very exciting social program.
