ALIA2002: Dr Terry Cutler keynote speaker
The Conference Committee is pleased to confirm that Dr Terry Cutler will lead off the conference at its first session on 20 May. Dr Cutler has recently stepped down as the Chairman of the Australia Council. We are extremely fortunate to have Dr Cutler as our opening speaker. He possesses a strong and clear vision of how Australian cultural industries may be affected by a digital globalised environment. His address at the ALIA 2002 will be especially important for our industry and for providing the context and issues to stimulate discussion at this conference.

Awards galore
Make sure you put the ALIA AGM in your diary so that you can celebrate the achievements of Kerry Smith and Neil McLean (on whom Fellowships have been conferred), Alf Gans (Redmond Barry Award) and Ian McCallum (who will receive the Association's most prestigious award, the HCL Anderson Award). Harbourside Auditorium, 5:00pm on Monday 20 May - all ALIA members and friends welcome.

Conference dinner
The Dinner for the ALIA 2002 Conference is being held at Dockside Function Centre at Cockle Bay, directly across the water from the Sydney Convention Centre. At the Dinner we look forward to toasting colleagues honoured by ALIA awards conferred at the AGM immediately preceding it. All are invited to join the award recipients and their colleagues in celebrating our profession. Delegate or not, be a part of the excitement - book for dinner now. 3M have sponsored entertainment for this event, so don't forget to pack your dancing shoes!

Issues forum
Around 150 postings have occurred since the Forum began in March. Much of the discussion has been stimulated the NSW Pay Equity Case and comments that appeared in newspapers on the work and value of librarians. Other issues discussed reflect the breadth of industry concerns - what it means to work in the library sector.

Nothing is like being there, but if you are unable to attend any part of the ALIA 2002 Conference in Sydney, membership to the Forum will give you a chance to contribute and capture the flavour of the issues that will drive the discussions. All library and information services personnel are welcome and urged to join the Forum as a Conference e-delegate and to take an active role in contributing to the industries future and success.

How much are you worth?
The ALIA NSW Forum, in conjunction with Information Management Staff by Zenith, have organised a satellite event at the ALIA 2002 Conference which will examine the implications of the NSW Pay Equity Case. An expert panel will discuss the nature of the decision and the implications for those directly affected by it as NSW Crown employees as well as the implications for claims that may flow from this decision to library and information service professionals working in other sectors.

5:30pm for 6:00pm, Tuesday 21 May, Sydney Convention Centre, Darling Harbour. $15.00 for ALIA members (and members of the RMAA, ASA, ASLA and LIANZA). Others $20.00. Seminar fee includes half-day free entry to the ALIA 2002 trade exhibition on Tuesday afternoon and refreshments prior to the seminar.

CPD credits for participation
Are you enrolled in ALIA's Continuing Professional Development Program? If so, you can claim CPD credits by attending the conference, visiting the trade exhibition or participating in some of the satellite activities. The conference, trade exhibition and ALIA NSW Forum's seminar on the Implications of the NSW Pay Equity Case are eligible under Activity F.

Ready for Library and Information Week?
The week [20-26 May 2002] is an opportunity for all libraries and information services to tell the story of today's libraries and information services and to communicate our key message - that Libraries change lives. Use the week to showcase the value of library and information services to users and to those who make policy and funding decisions.
http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/alw/2002/

ALIA would appreciate further story contributions from library users to the Libraries change lives success stories website [http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/stories/]. There is still time to order LIW merchandise [http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/alw/2002/catalogue.html], but be quick!

LIW - A BIG thank you...
ALIA would like to express our sincere thanks to divine [http://www.divine.com], our key sponsor for Library and Information Week 2002 - without whose assistance Library and Information Week would not exist. We would also like to thank Southern Scene [http://www.southernscene.com.au] for their support to make the Libraries change lives success stories initiative a reality.

Group comings and goings
The ALIA Board of Directors have endorsed the ALIA Reference and Information Services Group [Vic, NSW, Tas]. The ALIA ACT and District Health Forum has decided to discontinue as a formal group of ALIA, but continue as an informal group, within the auspices of ALIA Health Libraries Australia and ACTive ALIA. The aliaHEALTH discussion list and the proACTive newsletter will be the main avenues for communication. The ALIA South Queensland University and Research Libraries Group, the ALIA Geelong Group, and the ALIA LATTe Group have all decided to discontinue.

Board elections
On 26 April, the ALIA executive director declared the results of the election for directors. Angela Bridgland was elected by general membership, Deanne Barrett by institutional members, and Vicki Mcdonald by the National Policy Congress. Congratulations to Angela, Deanne and Vicki. There was a very strong field of candidates and this was reflected in a very close vote - Beth McLaren missed out by only three votes in the institutional vote and two in the NPC vote.

Thank you to all candidates for your commitment to this very important role within the Association. The new directors will join the Board at its meeting of 23 May, together with Christine Mackenzie as vice-president (president-elect). At the AGM we will farewell Alan Bundy, Naida Tattersall and Chris Seaman, and thank them for the terrific contribution they have made as directors.

National Simultaneous Storytime
Following the highly-successful inaugural nationwide storytime during Library and Information Week 2001, the National Simultaneous Storytime will take place at 11:00am AEST on Wednesday 4 September 2002, during Literacy and Numeracy Week.

The aim of the National Simultaneous Storytime is to give exposure to the services to children in libraries by celebrating one of the post popular activities story time. By attracting and engaging young audiences, the event provides the opportunity to promote the value of reading and books, and the important role which libraries play in stimulating literacy.

The target audience for the storytime is children aged three to eight years - and their parents, grandparents, creches, teachers, day-carers, preschools, kindergartens, early-childhood centres and community groups. The chosen book for 2002 is Mrs Wilkinson's chooks by Leone Peguero, illustrated by Mike Spoor.
