Library workers in NSW equal-pay test case
The first Equal-pay Test Case under the new NSW Equal Remuneration Principle is now well-advanced. The proposed Library and Archives Award will cover library workers across a wide range of state public-sector agencies and is the subject of hearings now in-train in the NSW Industrial Relations Commission. ALIA has already given formal evidence to the Commission's hearings in support of the proposal for qualifications conferring eligibility for ALIA membership to be a part of the Award's classification criteria. Much more information at:

Call for nominations - election 2002
Nominations are called for ALIA vice-president and three positions on the Board of Directors of ALIA as incorporated under Corporations Law. The vice-president will be elected by the membership at large. One director is to be elected by the membership at large, one director is to be elected by institutional members, and one director elected by the nominated group representative to the National Policy Congress. Nominees should be personal members of the Association and will represent the interests of the organisation as a whole rather than those of a particular constituency. Nominations close 5:00pm EDST, 4 Febraury 2002.

Copyright licences meeting with CAL in December
Representatives from CAL met with ALIA's CIP Working Group at an August 2001 meeting. As an outcome of the meeting, ALIA is working with CAL to explore the possibility of developing tailored CAL licences. ALIA and CAL meet in Melbourne on 10 October to discuss the needs of corporate libraries. A further workshop is to be held in Sydney in early December 2001. This workshop is to canvas ways that ALIA and CAL may co-operate in designing appropriate licences for the corporate sector.

LIW2002 - Success stories
The major national focus for Library and Information Week 2002 (20-27 May) will be on success stories that - from the user's perspective - demonstrate how libraries and information services contribute to achievement in all walks of life. The success stories project will contribute to a national online archive and promotions campaign. All libraries and information services are encouraged to be involved. Further information will be posted as it becomes available. The success stories will link closely with the ALIA 2002 biennial conference, Sydney, 19-22 May 2002. The project is steered by cross-sectoral group with representation from ASL, CAUL, ASLA, FLIN, FOLA and ALIA.
Survey of current and future services
ALIA has contracted Dr Patricia Gillard of User Insite Pty Ltd to design an information and communication strategy which will change the way in which ALIA engages with members. User Insite is about to conduct a survey of 450 randomly-sampled ALIA members about current and future services and the best ways to provide these. This will give the Association a detailed picture of current services that you value, and what you want for the future. If you are polled in this survey, please take ten minutes to complete the online questionnaire, in order to contribute to improved Association services.
Another new ALIA group
ALIA Health Libraries South Australia Group [http://www.alia.org.au/groups/healthsa/]] is the latest group approved by the Board of Directors. The group is busy planning for the 2003 Specials, Law and Health Libraries conference, and aims to provide CPD activities, and to foster and promote members' professional interests. To join any of the now 72 groups, register at http://www.alia.org.au/groups.html or phone 1800 020 071.
Groups budgets for 2002
Just a reminder to Group treasurers and other office-bearers that Group budgets are required this week. All forms are available online and can either be completed online or downloaded and submitted to ALIA National Office by mail. We also require an end-of-year report for inclusion in the Association's Annual report as well as for our record-keeping.

Ideas Forum happening
The ALIA Board of Directors has long viewed career-long education for the profession as an important issue. The Library and Information Science Education for the Knowledge Age (LISEKA) Project will focus on the development of a national approach to career-long education of library and information workers, as an effective framework for the future will require partnerships between a wide range of stakeholder groups and individuals. To identify issues and commence the consultative process, invitations have been extended to stakeholders from amongst employers, educators, and other interest groups to attend an Ideas Forum in Melbourne on Friday 16 November.

Promotion of library and information services
ALIA has engaged Katie Blake to look into recent national and international research into public perceptions of library and information services and of the professionals working in them. If you know of current research and innovative promotional campaigns in the sector, Katie would like to hear from you. This research is the first step in one of ALIA's key strategic initatives - a three- to five-year campaign promoting libraries and information services in the knowledge age. It is supported by a cross-sectoral steering group with representation from ASL, CAUL, ASLA, FLIN, FOLA and ALIA.
