Libraries: here for the long run
ALW2000 will be celebrated and enjoyed by many next week [15-21 May]. Please check the ALIAnet ALW pages for all the latest of what's happening during ALW2000.

ALW Oration
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the ALW Oration scheduled to take place on Friday 12 May has been cancelled. We wish to thank the State Library of Victoria and the ALIA Victoria Branch for their co-operation and hard work and look forward to planning and presenting future ALW Orations.
National Library Technicians Day
National Library Technicians Day will be celebrated on Tuesday 16 May during ALW. Find out how it will be celebrated in your area on the ALIAnet events pages [http://www.alia.org.au/events/]. Sales of the NLTD lapel pin have been very encouraging and the pins will be worn by many on the day. Supplies of the pins are still available and can be purchased through ALIA National Office ($5.00).

Send a webcard today!
In a first for our website, ALW2000 is now offering the opportunity to send a webcard to the person of your choice. Simply follow the instructions and choose your favourite image, background colour, and text to send. A copy is previewable onsite, then a short message is sent to the recipient (via e-mail) advising him/her that there is a personal webpage especially crafted and awaiting viewing. More than 200 people have sent cards in just the first week of operation!

ALW in inCite
The July issue of inCite will feature ALW2000. Stories and photographs (original prints, please - not digital) should be sent to incite@alia.org.au.nospam by 1 June 2000. We look forward to receiving news and reports of all your ALW events, including the NSW Branch Sydney Harbour Bridge Walk which will take place on Sunday 21 May and ALIA ACT branch's success in getting the ABC to devote their 'Snapshot' program (one minute before 7:00pm News) to ALW for the entire week. ABC's Snapshot will also feature the Vic Branch Statewide Storytime with the simultaneous reading of The hungry caterpillar, by Eric Carle which will take place in libraries across Victoria at 2:15pm on Thursday 18 May.

Federal Budget
Senior staff at ALIA National Office offer an analysis of the Federal Budget as handed down by treasurer Peter Costello on Tuesday night. A summary of the full report will be printed in the June inCite, but you'll need to view the online
document to get the full picture.

Viri, spams and network blockages
It has been a quite a week for internet activity, malevolent and otherwise. The coincidence of the distribution of the ILOVEYOU worm, a number of broadcast e-mails through ALIAnet e-lists, and the resurfacing of some web-based problems on ALIAnet has given us a few sleepless nights, and has affected the performance of many ALIAnet services - especially web services.
People who access ALIAnet through Novell BorderManager-controlled systems are wreaking total havoc on our system, and that of many others around the world. Subsequently, the following IP addresses are now blocked from accessing ALIAnet's website until they can demonstrate that they have configured their system correctly: 202.50.90.9, 203.108.120.146, 203.108.211.114, 203.108.43.74, 203.108.59.221, 203.30.206.13, 203.37.71.74, 203.61.51.125, 207.34.57.10, 208.225.145.133, 209.208.246.143, 209.215.127.2, and 212.216.239.3. If you can identify any of these numbers as your own (an IP address is a unique number assigned to each computer connected to the internet - but is often hidden from users by being translated into something more recognisable, such as 'alia.org.au').
