Australian Library Week 15-21 May 2000
Libraries: here for the long run. Only a month away now, and orders are flooding in for posters, bookmarks, postcards, stickers, tattoos and balloons via our online merchandise catalogue. The ALW media kit is also proving very popular.
If you have an event that you would like to have mentioned on the ALW pages on ALIAnet (or in inCite), or if you are developing a website or web pages with ALW events - please let us know via enquiry@alia.org.au.nospam (please remove the '.nospam' from address) - and please use the ALW banner images (available on ALIAnet). http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/alw/

A New Tax System
A comprehensive paper on the impact of the GST on the sector, prepared in consultation with PricewaterhouseCoopers, is presently being delivered to all ALIA institutional members. An extract, covering aspects of interlibrary loans and the GST, will be delivered to voucher-only members next week. Copies of the full paper are available for personal members upon request. A request form is available online at http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/gst/.
Sporting librarians
Do you know any librarians, past or present, who have represented their region/state/territory or even Australia in any sport? We are putting together a special feature on librarians in sport and need your input. Please send details to the inCite editor at incite@alia.org.au, telephone 02 6215 8222, or fax 02 6282 2249, by 3 July 2000.
The digital agenda
Check out our new digital agenda section of ALIAnet for all the latest ALIA and library sector news on the Digital Agenda Bill 1999, including the ALIA copyright information sheets, links to copyright articles in inCite, links to the Digital Agenda Bill itself (and the LACA Committee's Advisory Report), links to submissions to government and parliamentary inquiries, letters to members and senators, and a list of addresses of politicians to lobby for change.

National Policy Congress!
We have now set the place and venue for the inaugural National Policy Congress. Please note that divisional representatives should make their travel and accommodation bookings as soon as possible.
The NPC will be held on 26 May 2000 [9:30am to 5:30pm] and 27 May 2000 [8:30am to 12:30pm], at the Rydges Canberra (formerly The Lakeside). A block booking for accommodation has been made at Rydges Canberra at the rate of $105 per night - bookings should be made directly with Rydges using the online form linked below. ALIA has negotiated a group rate (up to 45 per cent off) with Qantas - bookings for air travel should be made using the online form - also linked below. We look forward to seeing you in Canberra in May.

National Policy Congress!!
An important reminder concerning divisional representatives: a number of divisions of ALIA have yet to provide the name of their nominated representative. This person is not necessarily the divisions' representative to the National Policy Congress (NPC), but is the one who also carries the voting rights for the division. The NPC elects two directors to the Board, and the voting papers have been distributed to nominated representatives.
If your division has not yet given the name of your representative to ALIA National Office. please e-mail enquiry@alia.org.au.nospam (please remove the '.nospam' from address) RIGHT NOW!
