ALIA Ltd
Following sanctioning by members at the recent EGM, and ratification by general councillors at a meeting on 23 February, the Association is now a registered incorporated company [ACN 090 953 236], under Part 5B.1 of the Corporations Law. Our name (Australian Library and Information Association Ltd) and Australian Company Number will appear on all future business letterheads, official company notices, receipts, purchase orders, statements of accounts and invoices, cheques, bills of exchange, forms and advertisements that make a specific offer capable of being accepted (such as order forms). ALIA conference organisers will need to note that our full company name and ACN must appear on all conference materials. [http://www.alia.org.au/governance/review/]

Australian Library Week 15-21 May 2000
Libraries: here for the long run. Only two months away, and our first orders are now being taken for posters, bookmarks, postcards, stickers and balloons via our online merchandise catalogue, and through an centre insert into this month's inCite magazine. This year we have generous sponsorship from pieNETWORKS, whose presence in the library and information sector is becoming well-known.

To make a bigger splash this year, the ALW committee offer tattoos (non-permanent) to advertise your affiliation with the library sector. And, to assist those who wish to make contact with the media and to promote their ALW events, an ALW media kit (available online and in print).

Don't forget, if you have an event that you would like to have mentioned on the ALW pages on ALIAnet (or in inCite), or if you are developing a website or web pages with ALW events - please let us know via enquiry@alia.org.au - and feel free to use the ALW banner images (available on ALIAnet). http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/alw/

Education matters on ALIAnet
The redesign of the ALIA education and CPD web pages is now almost complete. Visit ALIAnet's education web pages for information on a variety of resources including the new CPD scheme, the CPD e-list, the ALIA career development kit, and the ALIA mentoring program. In time we will also provide links to CPD activities and training providers. http://www.alia.org.au/education/

Have you registered for the new CPD scheme?
On your ALIA membership renewal form there is a box where Associate and Technician members may elect to join the ALIA CPD (continuing professional development) scheme. If you would like to take advantage of the opportunity and to have 18 months to complete your first reporting year (to be completed by June 2001), it is important that you register NOW! http://www.alia.org.au/education/cpd/

aliaCPD-speak!
Would you like the opportunity to communicate with other members of the library and information sector about CPD issues? Perhaps you have some information about CPD activities you would like to share, or you may have a question or two? ALIA now offers an e-list for people undertaking CPD, or for those with an interest in CPD matters. Join the list via http://www.alia.org.au/alianet/e-lists/.

ALIA Awards for Innovation
Formerly a local ALIA Victoria award, and now proudly sponsored by Library Locums (a division of the One Umbrella Group), the national ALIA Awards for Innovation recognise innovative practices developed by library staff in any area of library activity. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2000 Awards. Open to all levels of library staff who are personal ALIA members, a cash award ($500) is made to a winner in each of the following categories: school libraries; public libraries; academic libraries; law libraries; health libraries; and special libraries. Nominations close 20 April 2000. http://www.alia.org.au/awards/

VLO is all the go
Three-letter acronyms (TLA's) are back in vogue, and so we are thrilled to introduce a new acronym into our lexicon: VLO. Vital Link Online (VLO), the ALIA office-bearers list, last made the news in December 1999. Much more data has now been fed into the system, and we have begun the process of replacing all hand-crafted and maintained web-based committee lists with a link to Vital Link Online. We will be accelerating this process, hoping to replace all divisional committee pages over the next month. If you are involved with any divisional committee, and have yet to furnish details to ALIA National Office (this will be apparent if a search of VLO brings up no matching results) please send these vital details to vital.link@alia.org.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address).

The final stage of this process [mid-April] will involve the removal of transitional information on the various divisional committee pages and link directly to committees within Vital Link Online from a customised 'committee' button placed on the main divisional page(s). We are still very keen to get feedback about Vital Link Online. Each VLO page offers a link for feedback, or you can comment directly to updates@alia.org.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address).

National Policy Congress
In developing the new constitution for ALIA, General Council have included an Annual National Policy Congress that will offer an important consultative mechanism to allow divisions and members to have input into the policy-making processes of the Association.

To ensure that the broadest views on issues would be canvassed through the congress, every division has been requested to discuss this matter at their meetings and to nominate their representative to the National Policy Congress. When the National Policy Congress meets, all division representatives will be invited to speak on behalf of their division and will carry voting rights for their division and proxies for divisions not represented. Individual members and representatives from other organizations may attend the congress but will not have voting rights.

The inaugural Congress has been scheduled for 26 May (all day) and 27 May (half day). The venue has yet to be confirmed. Items for discussion will include division structure, by-laws, accreditation of library services and the impact of the GST.

Restructuring - last chance to comment
The final ALIA General Council meeting of November 1999 considered a paper prepared by the ALIA Board of Education proposing changes to membership categories, to ensure that the categories reflect the range of expertise of ALIA's members. General Council also considered a series of models outlining possible divisional structures in the new organisation. The Association is seeking input from all members on the proposed membership categories and models for divisional structure. Comments and further feedback to ALIA National Office are due by 17 March 2000. Comments by the online feedback form, post, fax or e-mail to enquiry@alia.org.au are encouraged. ALIA2000: capitalising on knowledge
23-27 October 2000, National Convention Centre, Canberra. The Association's Biennial Conference will be held in the national capital in beautiful spring weather. The focus of the conference will be on the nature of information in the twenty-first century and the challenges for the profession and on the relationships between librarians and other information professionals. http://conferences.alia.org.au/alia2000/

Feedback
We have been thrilled by the response to aliaNEWS from subscribers. It is gratifying to know that we are providing a useful and timely information, and in a format that is easy to read. We now have countless supportive and constructive compliments (but are always eager for more!). As always, though, we would like to know your thoughts on what you would like to see in this broadcast, and how you would like to see it.

Send your comments to Ivan Trundle, manager, communications and publishing (please remove the '.nospam' from address).
