New subcategory of membership
From January 2000, a new category of membership will be available to Associate and Technician members of ALIA. The CPD subcategory will appeal to those members who wish to maintain and broaden their knowledge and skills systematically and to enhance their life-long professional performance - and to have that commitment recognised by others. http://www.alia.org.au/education/cpd/

ALIA career development kit
Following a pilot study conducted earlier this year, the ALIA career development kit is now also available as a free membership benefit to institutional members of ALIA. Designed for senior managers, this staff development tool contains a workbook and a package of workshop resources to identify staff career development goals, training and skill development needs, and to assist senior managers in contributing to the on-going job satisfaction of their staff. http://www.alia.org.au/education/cpd/career.kit.html

Manager - policy, projects and research
ALIA National Office has a vacancy for an exciting senior position - the successful candidate will play an important role in ALIA's National Office operations by providing high-level specialist advice and services to Association members, ALIA General Council and its committees, and to external organisations and individuals. Applications due by 22 October 1999. http://www.alia.org.au/employment/

Women's Online Week 27 Oct - 2 Nov 1999
Women's Online Week is a national initiative set up by Online Australia and supported by ALIA. It aims to encourage women to use online services, and to find out what online services are offered. Libraries are encouraged to get involved by hosting internet introductions, holding special events for women online, or by encouraging women to access the internet or other online services. Copyright commentary
ALIA has made a submission to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Legal and Constitutional Affairs inquiry into the Copyright Amendment (Digital Agenda) Bill 1999. Our submission and ALCC submission will be available on our submissions page as soon as release permission has been received from the Committee. The committee is required to report to parliament by 9 December 1999.

Commentary on the Copyright Amendment (Digital Agenda) Bill 1999 has been received from Jamie Wodetzki, senior associate of Minter Ellison. This commentary closely analyses the key definitions, the problem areas, and the ramifications of the proposed amendments and how they will affect the sector.

ALCC consultant Jamie Wodetzki has prepared a draft letter to assist those who wish to lobby members of parliament on the Digital Agenda Bill.

Election for ALIA vice-president (president-elect) 2000
Nominations for the position of vice-president (president-elect) 2000 have been received from Alan Bundy, Susan McKnight and Janette Wright. Ballot papers are being prepared and will be circulated to members as an insert in the October issue of inCite. The ballot will close in ALIA National Office at 5.00pm on Monday 15 November 1999. More information about the candidates: http://archive.alia.org.au/governance/elections/1999/.

National inquiry into rural and remote education
The Association has recently made a submission to the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission's national inquiry into rural and remote education. The submission was made by ALIA National Office with the assistance of the ALIA Rural and Isolated Libraries Special Interest Group, the ALIA National School Libraries Section, and the ALIA National Technical and Further Education section. The submission is now available on ALIAnet at http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/submissions/.

ALIAnet's new look
It has taken exactly 12 months to the day (!) to convert all of ALIAnet's webpages to the new format as proposed back in September 1998. Now that we have completed a 'clean-sweep', it is now time to work back through the 6500 pages to ensure that all of the pages work properly. We have noted user comments that the site is getting slow in peak periods - we have identified that a robot indexer drops in for a 'visit' and swamps our internet connection for up to two hours at a time. Action has been taken to prevent the miscreant robot from using up all available bandwidth...

Feedback
We have been thrilled by the response to aliaNEWS from subscribers. It is gratifying to know that we are providing a useful and timely information, and in a format that is easy to read. We now have countless supportive and constructive compliments (but are always eager for more!). As always, though, we would like to know your thoughts on what you would like to see in this broadcast, and how you would like to see it.

Send your comments to Ivan Trundle, manager, communications and publishing (please remove the '.nospam' from address).
