inCite January/February combined issue
With the imprimatur of the executive committee of General Council, and following extensive consultation with pre-press production staff and associated print contractors, future January and February inCite's will be delivered as a combined
'double-issue' at the beginning of February. The bumper issue will include the regular and highly-successful directory information and year calendar that has normally been part of the January issue. There will be no sacrifice in the level of content
delivered to members. The move to 11 issues per year is seen as a logistical solution to a difficult problem, and not a reduction in service. http://incite.alia.org.au/1999/
ALW 2000 theme announced
As foreshadowed in the previous aliaNEWS broadcast, Australian Library Week 2000 will held in the week of 15-21 May 2000, with the theme 'Libraries: here for the long run'. We will keep you informed about design and availability of promotional
material, but your early planning for ALW2000 activities will ensure that it will be a great success!
ALIA AGM draft minutes published
The draft minutes of the ALIA Annual General Meeting are now available on ALIAnet: http://www.alia.org.au/governance/meetings/agm/1999.draft.html. Motions passed at the meeting have now been
resolved by General Council as required under Bylaw 13 of the Constitution. The acting executive director and financial services staff had a preliminary planning meeting with the liquidator on 2 September 1999 - we will be writing to all divisions about
their involvement in the liquidation process.
Seniors Online Day
Tomorrow is the inaugural Seniors On-Line Day [7 September]. To coincide with the International Year of the Older Person, the day is dedicated to older Australians accessing and using the internet. Libraries are expected to play a significant role in
providing tutorials and further information on the day's activities.
ALIA events calendar now online
We have been toiling away at producing an online format of our successful inCite 'Events' column that reads as a monthly calendar, in addition to our state-by-state listing. Take a look at our new monthly calendar interface and let us know what
you think. We have no intention of deleting the state-by-state listing, but rather we are aiming to offer an alternative for those who want to see the whole range of ALIA activities across the country.
Election for ALIA vice-president (president-elect) 2000
Nominations for the position of vice-president (president-elect) 2000 have been received from Alan Bundy, Susan McKnight and Janette Wright. Ballot papers are being prepared and will be circulated to members as an insert in the October issue of
inCite. The ballot will close in ALIA National Office at 5.00pm on Monday 15 November 1999. More information about the candidates: http://archive.alia.org.au/governance/elections/1999/vice-president/.
Copyright and the Digital Agenda Bill
The Copyright Amendment (Digital Agenda) Bill 1999 has been introduced into federal parliament - and the Bill, along with the explanatory memorandum and the second reading speech, are now online. The Bill in its present state is of significant
concern to the Association, and as a member of the Australian Libraries Copyright Committee and the Australian Digital Alliance, ALIA will be working with both of these groups to ensure that the interests of its members and the library sector are
represented. http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/copyright/
E-list subscribe difficulties?
A few users of Microsoft Outlook Express have had difficulty in subscribing to ALIAnet (and other) lists, due to the configuration of their e-mail client. The solution is simple, and involves turning off html or MIME formatting in the client
preferences. Here's how: In Microsoft Outlook Express, click Tools, Options, Send, and select mail-sending format and then select 'plain text'. If you have already tried to send messages to listproc@alia.org.au, open your address book, find the entry for
listproc@alia.org.au, select 'properties' with a right mouse click, and select 'Send e-mail using plain text only'.
If you are still having difficulty in subscribing to lists, contact Ivan Trundle directly and he will happily take you through the steps required to make your e-mail more compatible with the majority of e-lists, and with the added bonus of allowing other
recipients of your e-mail the benefit of reading your messages as true message text, and not as an attachment...
Feedback
We have been thrilled by the response to aliaNEWS from subscribers. It is gratifying to know that we are providing a useful and timely information, and in a format that is easy to read. We now have countless supportive and constructive compliments (but
are always eager for more!). As always, though, we would like to know your thoughts on what you would like to see in this broadcast, and how you would like to see it.
Send your comments to Ivan Trundle, manager, communications and publishing (please remove the '.nospam' from address).
