The bubbles, the salad, and the cooked chicken...
We will put on ALIAnet a 'state-of-play' report on the effects of a goods and services tax on libraries when the New Tax System (Goods and Services) Bill is voted on at the end of the parliamentary session on 30 June 1999. For information on ALIA's
position, our submission to the Senate Select Committee on a New Tax System and letters to the prime minister and treasurer are available online (and was published in inCite Feb 1999). The acting executive director, Jennefer Nicholson, and the
president, Craig Anderson, gave evidence at the Senate Committee hearing in February 1999. http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/submissions/gst.html
Conference proceedings [Adelaide 98]
In October 1998 more than 1000 delegates attended Adelaide 98: Pathways to knowledge, the 5th Biennial conference and exhibition of the Australian Library and Information Association. The papers from this conference are now available. The
proceedings include papers for 133 of the 140 sessions. The proceedings are now available from ALIA National Office at a cost of $75 to ALIA members and $105 to non-members, including postage. Orders should be mailed or faxed to ALIA, PO Box 6335, Kingston 2604, fax 02 6282 2249.

Vote [1] for ALIAnet!
The opening of the fourth annual Australian Financial Review/Telstra Australian Internet Awards Competition were announced some weeks ago. It is the premier competition for acknowledging and celebrating the achievements of Australian talent and
expertise on the Internet.
ALIAnet has been nominated in the Professional/Industry Association Site category, and has a good chance of winning in this new category (or perhaps even in the overall best site category!), so we are encouraging you - and everyone you know - to vote for
us. If every subscriber to this e-list voted only once, we could win by numbers alone. Our guestbook [http://www.alia.org.au/alianet/guestbook/] demonstrates the support that we receive onsite (one comment was posted just today). Please feel free to add your own comment, but we would appreciate it even more if you voted for us on the AFR/Telstra website.
All votes must be received by 5.00pm EST, Friday 6 August 1999. Individuals are entitled to one vote only for this award - so please spread the word! Vote NOW for your Association website! Remember, vote for the URL: "http://alia.org.au" and the site title: "ALIAnet".
All is revealed at: http://www.webawards.com.au
