Copyright advocacy
John Shipp, Virginia Walsh and Tom Cochrane met in Brisbane on 16 December, and discussed the future of copyright advocacy for the Australian library community. A link to their joint statement can be found from ALIAnet's home page. http://www.alia.org.au/media.releases/1998.12.21a.html
Executive director resigns
With great regret, we have accepted the resignation of Virginia Walsh as executive director of the Australian Library and Information Association, effective from 21 January 1999. Although Virginia advised us of her decision on Wednesday 9 December, a public announcement was delayed until John Shipp could meet with staff at the ALIA National Office. http://www.alia.org.au/media.releases/1998.12.14a.html
What's new on ALIAnet?
Another busy month has passed. Our focus in December has been to offer many new sectional publications and newsletters online. AARL now has a complete 1998 set online; [http://archive.alia.org.au/sections/health/vic/health.inform/] Health Inform; Local-Link; Aphelion; ELIS:A; and ALJ ...are all available for browsing.
Our Online Australia Day surveys proved to be most successful, and quite popular. Wander over to our surveys page and participate in the gathering of statistics on the internet and library usage (the surveys are still open). http://www.alia.org.au/poll
What's coming soon on ALIAnet?
Early in the new year, Adam Steer will be joining ALIA National Office as web publishing officer, and will be joining Sharon Cunningham in the production of ALIAnet web services. Adam will be the primary contact person for ALIAnet web-page matters, and will be working ion conjunction with Sharon Cunningham to update the countless pages of ALIAnet to the new format. Once Adam is brought up to speed on ALIAnet activities, ALIA members should notice a marked improvement in the delivery of ALIAnet
services.
We shall be employing - on a contractual basis - specialist programmers who will extract from our membership database details that would normally appear in our printed and immediately out-of-date Vital link and publish them live on the web via a
searchable interface. This will offer an up-to-date searchable index of all Vital link contacts.
