ALIA's response to the Pay Equity Report

4 May 2001

Mr Gordon Nuttall
Minister for Industrial Relations
GPO Box 69
Brisbane 4001

Dear Minister

Queensland pay equity inquiry

I refer to your recent letter directed to our Queensland State Branch, in which you seek comments upon the findings of the Pay Equity Inquiry.

The Australian Library and Information Association [ALIA] strongly supports the recommendations made by Commissioner Fisher and would be delighted to see them adopted in full by the Government.

ALIA is particularly pleased to note the recommendation [12] for introduction of a definition of 'equal remuneration' incorporating ILO Convention 100, Article 1[a].

We would also wish to emphasise our particular support for recommendations 8, 11 and 18, which go to demonstration of steps taken to ensure that proposed certified agreements, QWAs and awards guarantee equal remuneration for men and women employees engaged in work of equal or comparable value. In this regard, ALIA would urge the Government, in implementing this recommendation, to take all necessary steps to ensure that this requirement is vigorously applied, with a strong onus on applicants to demonstrate active compliance.

ALIA congratulates Commissioner Fisher on her report and looks forward to speedy adoption of its recommendations.

Yours faithfully

Phil Teece
Adviser, industrial relations and employment
