Submission by the Australian Library and information Association [ALIA] Chief executive officer, State Library of Queensland14 May 2001
Mr Matt Foley Dear Minister I refer to the advertisement for the position of chief executive officer, State Library of Queensland, which has recently appeared in the press. The Australian Library and Information Association [ALIA] is the professional organisation most concerned with the effective development of library and information services in Australia. It therefore has a vital interest in promoting the most effective leadership of the major library and information services in the nation. The Association recognises that applicants for senior management positions in library and information services require a combination of demonstrated leadership and managerial skills and experience, appropriate management training and overall career achievement. ALIA also believes, however, that major library and information services operate in environments where their chief executive officers are advantaged by the possession of formal appropriate qualifications and career experience. The Association believes that senior members of the library and information profession with such a combination of qualifications, skills and work experience are therefore best-fitted to fill senior leadership positions in the nation's library and information services. I would therefore urge that the selection process used to choose a new chief executive officer place major emphasis on possession of qualifications in library and information studies, together with extensive senior-level experience in provision of library and information services.
