BackgroundThe first National Simultaneous Storytime was held during Library and Information Week 2001. Since 2002, NSS has taken place during National Literacy and Numeracy Week. The cross-promotion of National Simultaneous Storytime and National Literacy and Numeracy Week by ALIA and the Commonwealth Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) has resulted in a greater interest in National Simultaneous Storytime and ensures that the event continues to attract a wide audience from around Australia. In 2005, over 38,000 children at 739 locations took part in readings of Wombat Stew by Marcia K Vaughan and Pamela Lofts. Over 290 books and 670 accompanying activity packs were sold.
